Ever since Hubby introduced me to the song “Bend It Like Bender!” by The Devin Townsend Project, I’ve been listening to it obsessively.

Hubby did further research on Devin Townsend, having first heard of him through his work with Steve Vai. As Hubby explains it, Devin has a voice that covers the range from opera to death metal. Truly. And he’s not afraid to display that range within his music. He can also manage campy, as displayed by his Vampira video (although the campiness is more about the video than the music).

Devin has worked with numerous other musicians in his career, including the aforementioned Steve Vai. On his “Bend It Like Bender!” song, the female voice belongs to Dutch singer Anneke van Giersbergen.

With the talent both Devin and Anneke display, they ought to get more attention than they do, hence this blog post. (Anneke has just over 5,800 Twitter followers; Devin has over 8,300. Let’s bump those figures up, shall we?) Because I like to mentally pair creative people with other people in a game I call Frankensteining the Talent Pool, of course I have a suggestion (or two!) for Devin and Anneke.

The first match I’d like to see is for Devin and Anneke to work with Trent Reznor and Mariqueen Maandig. This seems fairly obvious to me because Devin’s and Trent’s past works are similar enough to dovetail. After thinking about it for a bit, I had a less intuitive pairing: Devin and Anneke with Moby and Laura Dawn. Laura sang on Moby’s album “Hotel” and has a similar strong, clear quality to her voice that Anneke has. Moby and Devin share a love of experimentation.

It’s fun to play matchmaker, even if the matches never materialize.
